UFC 109: When Legends Collide

Pride. Resilience. Strength. Toughness. Glory. These are just some of the many elements champions are made of, what separates winner from wanna-bes. When it all comes down the line and with the body pushed past its human threshold, primal instincts kick in as heroes rise victorious above the grueling and punishing blows of fervent battle. But what happens when two giants clash, with their names echoing across the ages? One thing’s for sure: there will be blood and it will be one, ugly, brutal slugfest.
Such is the events that led to the war about to take place this weekend, February 6, between Randy “The Natural” Couture and Mark “The Hammer” Coleman, two of the most dominating big men in the world of mixed martial arts in their prime. They are beasts in the octagon who shared the limelight in epic battles against other fearsome fight icons like Chuck Lidell, Tito Ortiz, Maurice Smith and even Brock Lesnar and shogun Rua. But now they will meet in the ultimate clash of the titans, two Hall of Famers on a last shot at greatness, the victor further immortalizing his name in history.
Both had victorious title reigns in the ufc and Randy even held two belts in two weight divisions at the same time. Mark Coleman, sporting an impressive 16-9-0 record considering the caliber of fighters he fought through his long, tough career, left the UFC after struggling to regain the title but eventually dominated Pride FC with his patented ground-and-pound style from explosive takedowns. Meanwhile, Randy Couture, 17-12-0, stayed with the UFC and had tough and exciting title runs against top contenders and was still the crafty, veteran fighter despite passing his prime tears ago. His clinch game is still as good as any and his veteran experience is second to none.
Whatever happens, this epic battle will resonate through generations, going down as one of the best fights of all time. This weekend, keep your eyes peeled as these warriors finish carving their marks in mixed martial arts history. When legends collide, history is made and a heavy lesson is brewing soon.
